Description:
I directed and shot a series of social media promotional videos for The Yellow Wallpaper, a dance performance staged at the Queen Street Playhouse in Charleston, South Carolina. The project coincided with the installation of new LED projection walls at Clemson University’s Charleston-based Digital Production Arts video studio. This provided me with an opportunity to explore virtual production techniques, combining projected digital imagery with live performance.

For the visual concept, I drew inspiration from the wallpaper design featured on the cover of the short story collection containing The Yellow Wallpaper. Working with choreographer Georgia Schrubbe, we developed a minimalist approach that emphasized bold silhouettes against the LED projection. I tested various lighting scenarios with both LED and tungsten kits before ultimately settling on a clean, graphic aesthetic inspired by the iconic openings of James Bond films.

Rather than heavily editing the footage, I chose to capture the choreography in long, uninterrupted takes, allowing the dance and visual environment to speak for themselves. The finished promotional videos were released on social media and proved effective in generating interest and attendance for the performance, which was supported by a South Carolina Arts Council Grant.

The production was filmed on a Blackmagic URSA camera, with me serving as both director and cinematographer. The project also expanded my experience with virtual production workflows, strengthening an area I am eager to share with students in both production and classroom environments.
